About the Tournament

About the Tournament

What? The Marc J. Small Memorial tournament is a fun-filled day celebrating the community and honoring Marc's memory and love of the game. While this is run as a tournament, the day is really all about fun. Teams will play 3v3 games on short-sided fields in a friendly tournament. In addition, we will have a fully stocked snack stand throughout the day, plus a variety of baskets for raffle and silent auction prizes. All proceeds from the day go towards scholarships awarded annually to FC Montco graduating seniors.

Who? All FC Montco players and families.

  • Intramural players: If your child is playing spring soccer (peewees or intramural), they are already registered - all spring teams are part of the tournament each year.
  • Travel players will register through their coaches.
  • Adult division - Do you have coworkers who want to have some fun outside of the office? A little sibling rivalry that needs to be settled on the field? A few neighbors want to prove they still know how to have fun? Sign up as an adult team and join in the fun of the day!

Where? Heebner Park, Worcester Township

This event is not possible without the support of our FC Montco families. Please consider volunteering today!

About Marc J. Small

About Marc J. Small

Marc J. Small was a Lower Providence resident and played soccer throughout his youth for Methacton United Soccer Club and Methacton High School. Marc was a Special Forces Medical Sergeant serving with the United States Army in Afghanistan. On February 12, 2009, Marc was killed in action in service to our grateful nation.

Marc became a medic with the Army’s Special Forces to care for his comrades in arms, as well as some of the poorest, most oppressed people on earth. As evidence to his intelligence, motivation, and courage, Marc quickly rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, learned the invaluable skills necessary to care for soldiers and civilians, and earned the coveted “Green Beret.” Marc had only been in Afghanistan for 3 weeks when he was killed, but during that time, he treated 40 patients per day and built important relationships with the local people and children.

To honor Marc’s memory, FC Montco sponsors the annual Marc J. Small Memorial Soccer Tournament. This small-sided soccer tournament focuses on elements that were an important part of Marc’s personality and life: strength, bravery, and character.

All proceeds from the tournament fund two $3,000 Marc J. Small Memorial Scholarships awarded annually to a male and a female senior from the Methacton High School soccer teams who have played for FC Montco.  See the 2023 Scholarship Application for details.

Congratulations to our 2024 winners:
Cole Larcinese and Aubrey Beaugard

Rather than reward solely on academic or athletic success, these scholarships are awarded based on the traits that Marc most personified:  Strength, bravery and character.  After a rigorous evaluation of written applications, coaches recommendations and personal references, Marc's family felt that Cole and Aubrey best embodied these ideals.

Cole Larcinese has been an annual contributor to the Marc J. Small Memorial Tournament as a player, referee, and volunteer, helping each year to line the fields for tournament games.  He is a two-year varsity player at Methacton High School and was voted captain by his teammates for his FC Montco team (FC Montco 2006 Freedom).

On the field, Cole’s coaches praised his team leadership skills, where as a Varsity player he was always in attendance on the bench for the JV games, supporting his teammates within the program.  He also demonstrated resilience and determination, battling back from two significant injuries early in his high school career.

Off the field, Cole spent many years helping line fields for FC Montco for the Travel and Intramural games at Heebner Park and Arcola Intermediate School.  Cole could always be found spending time helping train kids at a local gym.

Aubrey Beaugard was a 4-year Varsity starter at Methacton High School, was twice voted by her teammates as Offensive MVP, and was co-Captain in her senior year. She has received multiple Pioneer Athletic Conference awards and guided her club team to ECNL Nationals in two different seasons.

Aubrey also finished her Methacton soccer career as the school’s Single Season and Career Goal Scorer record holder.  Her Methacton Coach called her "a great role model," and noted how she "really connected with the younger members on the team.”

Away from the pitch, Aubrey was a track and field team member and PAC Champion, National Honor Society member, and was an active volunteer in the community, where she spent organizing the Methacton Red Cross Blood Drive.  Like our male winner, she too has been a fixture at the tournament since 2011 as a player, referee, and volunteer.

Cole and Aubrey will each receive $3,000 scholarships to apply toward their higher education goals, a plaque honoring their achievement, and their names are engraved on the perpetual award displayed at Methacton High School.
