Charge Keep Rolling With Clean Sheet Against Marple Newtown

Sept. 22, 2019 -- The Charge continued their assault on the Central League with a 3-0 win over Marple Newtown in their home opener. The Charge had no problems with a slow start in this one, as they scored first and were in control for most of the game.

Jessa announced her presence early on with a hard shot off the post. Minutes later, Sam forced a takeaway on defense and worked the ball ahead to Sophia. She fought through traffic to get the ball wide to Riley on the right side. Riley dribbled in and hit a shot just inside the near post to put the Charge up 1-0.

Later in the half, Ava played the ball up the line to Brooke, who outraced the defense and crossed to Jessa in the box. Jessa battled through the Marple Newtown defense, and eventually, the ball bounced back out to Brooke at the top of the box. She settled it and drilled a shot past the goalie for a 2-0 lead.

In goal, Penny made several good saves to keep Marple Newtown off the board and also triggered a few attacking opportunities with strong throws downfield.

In the second half, the Charge applied relentless pressure, spending the majority of play in the offensive zone. Grace and Ava did some good work that resulted in shots on goal for both players, but the Marple Newtown goalie was up to the task.

Penny gave the Charge a 3-0 edge by taking a cross from Grace and knocking in her own rebound after initially hitting the post. The Charge looked to have a fourth goal when Jessa scored off a shot from Brooke, but the play was ruled offsides. Sam started that opportunity with a good throw-in to Brooke.

The attack continued when Tessa made a stop on defense and followed it with a big blast, sending the ball upfield to Cailyn. Cailyn passed to Violet, whose one-timer went wide left. Near the end of the game, a great throw-in by Tessa in the offensive zone found Ava open in the box, but the goalie made another nice save to prevent the goal. Meanwhile, Sophia made all the saves in net to preserve the Charge's first clean sheet of the season.

Overall, it was a well-played game by Mumford & Girls. The Charge (3-0) are back at it Sept. 29 at West-Mont United.
