The prospect of joining a travel team can be a daunting one for both parents and players, whether they are taking a step up from a recreational program or making the difficult decision to switch clubs.
Having lived through these decisions as parents ourselves, we recognize the two most important components are:
- The player's comfort with his/her new coach and teammates
- The parents' comfort with the new coach and other parents
In addition to the typical questions parents ask about a travel program, FC Montco offers a number of ways for potential new players to become more familiar with coaches, players, and training staff.
- Winter and Spring Academy
Every Winter and Spring, our professional training staff run extended training programs (for a nominal fee) for current and prospective travel players. The curriculum continues the progression of skills and tactics that were taught through the summer, fall, and winter. Academy offers the opportunity to train alongside potential new teammates with the same professional staff that will guide your player's development throughout the season. Winter Academy sessions begin in January and run through February, while Spring Academy begins in April and runs through the end of May. Note that certain age groups can be by invite only due to player headcount. Players interested in participating in the Winter Academy or Spring Academy should register using the registration link in the top navigation menu of this web page or at fcmontco.org/_registration.
- Guest play in Winter Leagues or in Spring Tournaments: Many of our teams participate in local Winter indoor leagues (typically Jan-Mar) that have looser roster requirements. In addition, many Winter and Spring tournaments sanction guest play allowing the player to spend time with potential teammates on and off the pitch over a full day or a weekend.
- Team Training Sessions
Most of our travel teams will conduct their own training sessions at various times throughout the spring. Please contact the coach for your player's age group.
